Highway Clean Up- June 20th. Volunteers needed!

Our annual highway cleanup will take place this year on Saturday June 20th. Volunteers needed! Meet at #56 Elk Road at 9:00 am for tailgate safety meeting and COVID guidelines from the MD. Please remember to practice social distancing at all times. Volunteers will individually drive to assigned section of highway to pick up garbage from roadside. Covid 19 restrictions apply. Please wear gloves and closed toe footwear; safety vest will be provided. This will take about 2 hours. Minors/Children are permitted with a supervising adult. This is a major MLBMS fundraising event. Due to COVID there will be no lunch served after.

Dissolved Oxygen Testing 2019/2020

MLBMS volunteers sampled the dissolved oxygen levels at the deepest point in the lake 4 times this winter.  This is the second year MLBMS has measured dissolved oxygen over the winter. The results show, that while oxygen levels again dropped below the level necessary for fish to survive, the levels did not drop as low as last year. The increase in lake level since last year may be the reason for the higher oxygen levels. The lake level has risen since last fall and hopefully a good spring runoff will continue the trend. Thanks to LICA for lending us the measurement equipment and to Erin Ritchie of LICA for writing up the results and to Don, John Dale and Richard for their participation and work.

Alberta Eco Trust Grant- Surface Water Flow Study

MLBMS received a grant from Alberta Ecotrust to study the flow of surface water in the Muriel Lake basin.  The project is underway, Solstice Environmental Management has been contracted to complete the study. So far they have built a digital elevation model using Lidar data, and mapped drainage throughout the basin. One of their outputs is “stream longitudinal profiles” – see the example, where stream elevation appears to rise. Next MLBMS volunteers will examine the identified potential blockages that may be inhibiting surface water flow to the lake.
