Lake Watch Readings
Muriel Lake volunteers (Jeff Hlewka and Richard Bourgeois) accompanied ALMS Technician, Caleb Sinn, with the first set of 10 reading for our lake watch report. More readings will be taken throughout the summer and the final report will be released in the new year.

Lake Level is up!
Spring is finally here and it seems like it is a good spring for Muriel Lake! Spring runoff has been strong, and the lake level is up. Last week the level (as measured by the government monitor near Gurneyville) reached 556.0 meters above sea level. The lake hasn’t been at this level since 2008! It isn’t up much, but its not down. Hopefully the trend continues.
The crew sampling for dissolved oxygen levels
We had a few brave gentlemen brave the lake in the middle of December to test for dissolved oxygen. There was 10 inches of ice on Muriel Lake and we were able to access the same spot that was used by AEP last year via ATV’s on top of the ice.

Our Goal
The Muriel Lake Basin Management Society is a registered “Not for Profit” Charitable organization. Our goal as a committee is to have an “Arm’s Length Study” conducted to find reasons for the drastic and continuing decline of Muriel Lake. The MLBMS would like to restore the lake water levels and make it a usable water resource for all Albertan’s, with the assistance of government, industrial and private agencies.

Water level is not getting any higher
The lake has lost almost 60% of its volume.
This water body is no longer usable as a recreational lake, due to the severe low levels which makes most power boating impossible or dangerous, sport fishing no longer exists as the game fish have all perished from the shallow levels and winter kill, and swimming is very difficult and not very enjoyable because of the muddy bottom.
